How To Winterize A Salt Water Pool

Closing your pool for winter is important for both chlorine and Salt PCT Drugs Water pools. If it is not done properly, your pool and equipment will suffer on both levels. You don’t want your pool to develop unhealthy stains!

One of the first things you should know about closing your salt water pool is the way your salt water generator works. During the summer months, your generator works efficiently because of the warm water, but the system will become affected when the water cools during fall and winter. It may even indicate your pool is low on salt when it is not.

Before Closing Your Salt Water Pool

  • Lower The Salt Level
Use salt test strips for an accurate reading and when the season starts cooling down, do not add anymore salt to the pool. It is better not to have a lot of salt in your pool toward the end of the season.
  • Balance The Water Chemistry
Balancing your water’s chemistry is important for all pools during closing time. Check the pH, alkalinity and calcium hardness. Keep in mind that as the temperature drops without circulation it’s easier for salts to form crystals.
  • Clean Your Pool
Make sure that your salt water pool is spotless! While cleaning any pool is important, it is especially important for pools that have an extra load of dissolved salt in the water. If your pool cover doesn’t fit tightly enough, you may also have to sweep around the pool every few weeks in order to keep debris out during winter!
  • Stain And Scale
Use a stain and scale preventive for metal and mineral control. Let the filter run 8-10 hours after adding mineral and stain remover because it will circulate the product thoroughly.
  • Enzymes
When your pool has a mesh cover, you can add an enzyme product to keep your pool protected from stains. Use a winter pool enzyme to prevent winter pool stains on a salt pool.

After Closing Your Salt Water Pool

  1. Do not add any salt
  2. Test the water every 6-8 weeks
  3. Keep the pool cover clean. Mesh covers may also require a little more maintenance.
