Think You Have A Leak In Your Pool?

Bucket Test

Have You Done The Bucket Test?

Are you noticing that the water level in your pool is constantly declining?  Maybe it’s a leak, maybe it’s just evaporation working hard!  Before you think of the worst possible scenario, consider trying a quick, easy, do-it-yourself approach first!  By conducting the bucket test, pool owners are able to accurately tell if their pool has a leak and potentially save hundreds of dollars.

The Do-It-Yourself Bucket Test

Here’s What You Need:

  1. Pool (with water, obviously)
  2. 5-Gallon Bucket
  3. Marker

Here’s How It’s Done:

  1. Fill the 5-gallon bucket with pool water at least 6 inches from the top.
  2. Leave the bucket on the highest or second highest step.  Make sure it is submerged in water at least 4 inches.
  3. Mark the water level inside the bucket, as well as outside.
  4. Let sit for at least 24 hours.
  5. After 24 hours have gone by, compare the two water levels.  If the water level inside the pool decreases more than that of the water inside the bucket, then there is a leak.  If they both decrease the same amount, evaporation is likely the culprit.

Please keep in mind that rain will affect the results so choose a 24 hour period with no rain.

Depending on your pool size and geographic location, it’s common to lose about a quarter inch of water per day due to evaporation.  If you are unfortunate enough to be experiencing a leak, then  contacting a professional from Aqua Pool is in your best interest!
